MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS 1

TORI KELLY - DEAR NOONE

ARTIST:TORI KELLY

ALBUM: UNBREAKABLE SMILE

RELEASE: 2015

GENRES: CONTEMPORARY R&B, POP

I like being independent

Not so much of an investment

No one to tell me what to do

I like being by myself

Don't gotta entertain anybody else

No one to answer to...

But sometimes, I just want somebody to hold

Someone to give me the jacket when it's cold

Got that young love even when we're old

Yeah sometimes, I want someone to grab my hand

Pick me up, pull me close, be my man

I will love you till the end

So if you're out there I swear to be good to you

But I'm done lookin', for my future someone

Cause when the time is right

You'll be here, but for now

Dear no one, this is your love song

Ooo-OhOh

I don't really lke big crowds

I tend to shut people out

I like my space, yeah

But I'd love to have a soulmate

And God'll give him to me someday

And I know it'll be worth the wait, oh

So if you're out there I swear to be good to you

But I'm done lookin' (But I'm done lookin'), for my future someone

Cause when the time is right

You'll be here, but for now

Dear no one (Dear nobody), this is your love song (Ooo-OhOh)

Sometimes, I just want somebody to hold

Someone to give me the jacket when it's cold

Got that young love even when we're old

Yeah sometimes, I want someone to grab my hand

Pick me up, pull me close, be my man

I will love you till the end

So if you're out there I swear to be good to you

But I'm done lookin' (But I'm done lookin'), for my future someone (Ooo-Yeah)

Cause when the time is right

You'll be here, but for now

Dear no one (Dear Nobody), this is your love song (This is your love song

Dear no-one, no need to be searchin', no

Dear no one...

Dear no one...

Dear No one, this is your love song.

The music video opens with the titles. The text of the artist's name and song title are in the same font, giving consistency and an identity to the song. These are positioned on the right hand side of the screen, and the camera composition centralises the artist in the background, with the focus on the artist mannequin in the foreground

After the introduction of the music video by the opening titles, a series of 16 shots synchronise to the first 16 beats of the song. These 16 camera shots are taken from section of the music video to come, to briefly introduce the viewer to the storyline of the entire video. The editing of this is driven by the music and familiarising the audience with the artist, the male who features in the storyline, as well as the locations.

In the music video there are two split screens, where we see the artist walking in one direction, and the editing of the video allows the the male to be walking in the same direction, after passing the wall. We see two different locations and perspectives simultaneously, seeing both of the 'characters' storylines join together.

There is also a change of pacing throughout the music video. In scenes where the storyline or lyrical become more intense, the pace quickens. A climax is built for the viewer during these scenes. The pace slows down in some lyrical sections of the music video, as well as close-ups of the artist, where she is thinking or walking. By slowing down, the viewer sees the importance of distractions to the artist within the story.

There a multiple close-up shots of the main artist. This conveys a lot of the emotion from the music video from her, as the main 'character' from the story that the song tells. These range from close-up to extreme close-up shots, from just the shoulders up to of the eyes. The screen-time that these close-ups have in the music video is quite long, and the pace of the music video slows down during these.

Through mise-en-scene, the clothing of artist is quite laid back, with a clear gold and black theme. Not only does this compliment the big, blonde, curly hair of the artist, but clearly represents both the genre of music and the story of the song. That is, that there is plenty of time to wait for Mr.Perfect to come to her. The genre of the song is pop and so the outfit is perfect for a young female artist and her audience. There aren't any distinct props through this music video, to keep the focus on her persona.

The lighting in this music video is varied. The majority of the music video is very bright, to highlight the happiness and content of the artist. The lighting is enhanced by the locations of filming, such as the bedroom, the rooftop and the street scenes for example. In the bedroom for example, a mixture of white curtains and large windows add to the lighting, whereas in scenes such as the stairs, in which the camera follows the male up to stairs, looking up, and watches the artist following him, looking down, the shadows of the people darken to view

There are four locations in this music video; a bedroom, a rooftop, the street and the staircase. The bedroom is the location where we see the artist completely in her own space. Although there are other locations where she is alone, she is clearly herself as she opens up to the camera. This is also a space for her to think, as she gazes out of the window. Cuts to the street locations follows what she was looking out of the window at. The street is the only location where she is immersed with other people. The camera in these scenes also follow the artist, either from behind or a tracking shot as she walks towards the camera. The rooftop scene gives perspective, as shots are often taken with a side profile of the artist, so that we can see whats behind her. Not only is this an advantage for the camera composition, as the out-of-focus background means that the audience's attention and focus in entirely on her, but also gives perspective regarding the story-line, as a chance to reflect the quick-paced scenes seen prior. The rooftop is also the location where the music video concludes. The staircase scene where she chases after the man is filled with changing paces, as the story of the video reaches its climax.

There is both diegetic and asynchronous sound throughout this music video. The diegetic sound is of the song and has been pre-recorded prior to the production of the music video. In the titles; where the song title and artist name appear on-screen, there is no sound, until the first of the 16 beats that introduce the song. Not all the lyrics in the song we see the artist singing in the music video. This is where the editing of the song later on has layered the sound, and so we cannot see the artist singing all parts throughout. There is asynchronous sound in some parts of the music video, where the lyrics of song we cannot see being sung on-screen

We also see editing in the concluding scene of the music video. The artist finally faces the guy she spent the music video following. However, when they face, he begins to disappear.  Although this leaves the interpretation up to the viewer, one assumes that he is her 'future someone' and so cannot be present in her life now. The camera angles used throughout the music video means that we do not see the male's face fully until this point.
