AUDIENCE EXPECTATIONS
What do you like about music videos?
-
ANSWER 1: The fact they tell a narrative and a story to the audience basically.
-
ANSWER 2: I like the fact that music videos sometimes have a certain narrative to them. So, I like the fact that they showcase the artist themselves, and the songs and the lyrics.
-
ANSWER 3: The fact that they involve the author in the creation of the artwork.
-
ANSWER 4: I like that they convey the artist's emotions and sort of how they are feeling. You can see how in a music video if the effects are good, I like a music video with good effects.
-
ANSWER 5: I like the fact that it makes the lyrics come to life, because you know how there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, so I like the fact that you begin to see what you hear.
-
ANSWER 6: I like that they provide a story-line to the lyrics so instead of just expecting to see an artist in a concert environment on-stage, you get a full story-line with a protagonist and an antagonist.
What kind of clothes would you expect to see in a female's music video?
-
ANSWER 1: If it is a pop music video, I expect to see quite casual, but quite party-kind of outfits. Not casual meaning everyday-casual but casual meaning party/casual.
-
ANSWER 2: I think that that depends on the genre. If it were R&B then quite sexualised clothing, but if it were pop then bright colours, make-up that is quite bright
-
ANSWER 3: Depending on the age of the artist. If it were an older-artist, around 19 tp 20, I expect to see her wearing skirts, shorts, komono, vest tops etc. Something that is quite casual for somebody her age. Whereas if it were something like an extravagant video, like Superbass by Nicki Minaj, then I expect to see costumes and bright make-up.
-
ANSWER 4: In a female's music video the clothing would have to be quite casual, because the artist's audience are often quite a bit younger than them and so they are likely to get inspired by them and take fashion advice from them. And so, something quite casual that the audience can replicate. Unless it is a really extravagant music video like Nicki Minaj or Lady Gaga, then it would have to be really 'out-there', and really brightly coloured too.

Would you prefer to see more shots of the artist singing, or as the artist being a part of the narrative?
-
ANSWER 1: I would see more of the artist being a part of the narrative.
-
ANSWER 2: I think I would like to see the artist being more of a part of the narrative.
-
ANSWER 3: I think there should be more scenes of the artist instead of the narrative.
-
ANSWER 4: I personally prefer a music video with more narrative.
-
ANSWER 5: Personally I think I prefer the artist singing because I like going to concerts, so I feel like they make it more personal if you see them singing
-
ANSWER 6: I think I prefer to see more shots of the artist singing, I think that if there is a narrative other people can be used as characters, rather than the main artist, but the main artist kind of provides the performance side of the video.
What kind of props would you expect to see in a music video?
-
ANSWER 1: Usually the instruments they may be playing or using to be a part of the music video or the music.
-
ANSWER 2: I would expect to see stuff like microphones, instruments, but it depends on the narrative of the video to be honest. So if it were a love story video, it could be set at a restaurant, with food, chocolate and stuff like that.
-
ANSWER 3: It depends on the video.m
-
ANSWER 4: For a pop music video, big props that depend on what the song is about. But props such as guitars, pianos, drums.
-
ANSWER 5: I would expect to see guitars, maybe something to do with smoke or fire,
-
ANSWER 6: Any instruments used by the band in the performance part of the music video. In the actual narrative, anything that adds to the theme. So if it something based on youth then any props that relate to youth
Would you prefer to see the artist in a single setting or in multiple settings?
-
ANSWER 1: I would prefer to see them in multiple settings to give the impression of being a part of everything and not being focused just on them.
-
ANSWER 2: I think multiple settings because it is better to have the artist following the narrative so it is not just them in a room, but in the whole story as well.
-
ANSWER 3: I would like to see the artist in a single setting because I feel like a single setting makes the music video more natural than changing setting every five seconds.
-
ANSWER 4: Multiple settings because I think that it makes it different. I feel like if a music video is in one place it can get a bit repetitive, so being in multiple settings makes it more interesting.
-
ANSWER 5: Preferably multiple settings because I feel like it adds energy and excitement because you don't know what is going to come next. And usually when the setting changes, outfits also change, so we do see change throughout the music video.
-
ANSWER 6: I think it is better to see the artist in multiple settings because it keeps up the enrgy of the music video, stops it from getting so repetitive.
